March 1956: The Tohono O’odham Nation agrees to a test site (with a 16” telescope) to be built on Kitt Peak in Arizona. Kitt Peak is a sacred mountain to the Tohono O’odham Nation who call it I’oligam Du’ag which means “Manzanita Bush Mountain.” | |
October 1957: AURA is founded |

December 1962: Official flag hoisting on Cerro Tololo in Chile. This was planned with the governor of the Elqui Department and the captain of the police present. | |
January 1963: AURA buys the property called “El Totoral” which includes close to 30,000 hectares with Cerro Tololo near its center. “El Totoral” means a place where Totora grass, a reed-like plant used for roofing, grows. | |
April 1963: Jurgen Stock is appointed first Director of CTIO | |
October 1963: A plot of land is purchased in La Serena for construction of the CTIO offices, laboratories and staff housing. The property was later extended to its current size through two additional purchases in July 1966 and May 1968. | |
