HST and Gemini emission images of NGC 3256
Left panels: HST/NICMOS 1.1micron continuum emission images except for NGC3256 which is at 1.6micron. Middle panels: HST/NICMOS continuum-subtracted Paschen-alpha line emission. Right panels: Gemini/T-ReCS N-band images, except for NGC3256 which is the narrow-band 8.7micron filter. For the typical distances (between approximately 35 to 70Mpc) of these LIRGs the images cover approximately the central 3 to 7kpc. The images have been smoothed with Gaussian functions with sigma = 1-1.5pixels. Orientation of all the images is north up, and east to the left.
